Kate Segal is serving her first term as State Representative for the 62nd House District, which covers most of Calhoun County and contains the cities of Battle Creek, Albion and Marshall.
During her time as State Representative, Segal has:
- Saved nearly 600 jobs at Duncan Aviation in Battle Creek by fixing a flaw in Michigan's tax code to exempt certain taxes for companies that do custom work on high-end aircraft, which will allow Michigan companies to more fairly compete for aircraft customization business.
- Led the fight to save the Michigan Youth ChalleNGe Academy, a Battle Creek-based nonprofit program run by the National Guard that gives at-risk youths the chance to transform themselves into successful adults.
- Introduced a plan to combat elder abuse in Michigan by strengthening consumer protections for seniors and increasing penalties for those who financially exploit them.
Prior to being elected to the House, Segal served on the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners from 2002 to 2008, serving as chairwoman in her final term. Segal is deeply involved in the community and has volunteered with a number of groups such as the United Way, the Urban League of Battle Creek, the Comprehensive Senior Care Corporation, the Junior League of Battle Creek and the Region IIIB Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council.
Segal is a graduate of Kalamazoo College, where she received a bachelor's degree in sociology, with a concentration in public policy and urban affairs. She lives in Battle Creek with her husband, Mike, and their daughter, Elise.
