House Democratic Floor Leader Greig votes to reject meaningless GOP school ranking system

LANSING — Today, House Republicans approved House Bill 5526 during a marathon late-night session, establishing a school ranking system to label Michigan schools without proposing resources or solutions to address school improvement. In response to its passage, House Democratic Floor Leader Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills) issued the following statement:

“This bill represents another change in school accountability, making it difficult for teachers and schools to provide a quality education to our students while trying to hit a constantly moving target. Instituting this A-F grading serves no other purpose than to provide a pretext to dismantle and close our struggling schools. We should instead follow the lead of states that excel at education by prioritizing meaningful measures to improve their schools and giving them the resources to actually get there.”
